The small size and physical isolation of the Marshall Islands pose a number of development challenges. These include very limited land mass on most atolls, population growth leading to overcrowding, limited progress with economic reforms and high costs of service delivery to dispersed populations. Providing reliable electricity across the country is also challenging and expensive, but crucial for the country’s future. With AusAID’s support, the Marshalls Energy Company is installing prepay metres for households on Majuro to assist customers in budgeting their electricity usage. Ebeye island in the Marshall Islands is one of the most crowded islands in the world, housing more people per square kilometre than Manhattan. This congestion makes accessing clean drinking water a significant challenge for the population. Australia is funding water tanks for Ebeye to ensure 100 per cent of households on the island have better access to clean water. Most of the land in the Marshall Islands is no more than three feet above the high tide mark. As a result, the country is extremely vulnerable to rising sea levels. Australia aims to build the resilience of vulnerable communities to natural hazards, particularly those that are climate-induced.
